What are AHAs and BHAs?
Before we dive into the benefits, let's get a grip on what AHAs and BHAs actually are.
AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) are water-soluble acids that come from natural sources such as fruit and sugar. They primarily work on the skins surface gently dissolving dead skin cells and promoting the renewal of fresh cells beneath. This process is what brightens the complexion and smooths the skins texture, all while reducing the appearance of fine lines and dark spots.
BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are oil-soluble and they penetrate deeper into the pores. These work to exfoliate from within, helping to clean out the gunk - excess oils, dirt, and other nasties that lead to clogged pores and breakouts. BHAs are especially beneficial for oily or acne-prone skin types.
The benefits of AHAs in skincare
Brightens skin tone: AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acids are super effective at getting rid of that dead skin that is just sitting around making you look dull.
Smooths skin texture: AHAs encourage cell turnover as they gently exfoliate the skins surface. As it cleans away any dead cells it makes it smoother to touch and regular use leads to softer and more refined skin.
Reduction in fine lines and wrinkles: As we age our skin's natural cell turnover rate slows, which leads to some of those fine lines. As we stimulate collagen production through the use of AHAs, we can help our bodies to reduce the appearance of those fine wrinkles over time.
Fades dark spots Some dark spots and hyperpigmentation can be helped by AHAs and their exfoliating powers. Again, that removal of dead cells and encouraging new ones can assist with balancing out the complexion.

The benefits of BHAs in skincare
Unclogs pores: Penetrating deep into the pores, BHAs are able to break down impurities to help combat breakouts.
Controls oil production: BHAs not only exfoliate but also help with regulating oil production, which helps to skin feel balanced.
Reduces inflammation: Anti-inflammatory properties are often found in BHAs. These can help to soothe irritated or inflamed skin. This can benefit anyone experiencing redness, sensitivity, or ongoing acne issues.
Refines pores: Regular use of products containing BHAs can help to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. This helps your skin to look smoother and more refined.
