How often do you exfoliate? Daily, weekly, whenever you remember to, or never. Did you know that exfoliation is ancient! Skincare isn't something new. For thousands of years people have been taking care of their skin by removing the dead skin cells along with oil and dirt build up. Ancient Egyptians used a combination of pumice stones, sand, and plants such as aloe vera to take care of their skin. The strigil was a tool used by the ancient Greeks. After applying olive oil to their skin they would use the strigil to scrape themselves clean.
So why exfoliate? Here are 3 reasons why you should be exfoliating as part of your skincare routine.
Our skin is covered in pores, on our faces and our bodies. By removing the dead skin and buildup on the surface we make sure that this debris can't make it's way inside our pores and block them up. Dead skin seals the pores and as our sebaceous glands produce oils it becomes trapped under the dead dry skin and can lead to breakouts.
Increases cell turnover.
It's all about that circulation. Exfoliating in a circular motion stimulates our lymphatic drainage system, which takes care of some of our internal cleansing. It helps by waking up the skin cells and stimulating oxygen-rich blood to the surface which aids our body to heal. By removing the dead and dying skin cells, new cells are kick started into action and the result is glowing and radiant skin.
Stimulates collagen synthesis.
Collagen is a protein in our skin that improves its structure, elasticity, and strength. As we age the amount of collagen we produce starts to decrease, however exfoliating helps create an environment that promotes collagen production. By giving ourselves a boost to produce collagen we are helping our skin to look healthy for longer.
How often should I exfoliate?
When it comes to how often, listen to your skin. The product you use may also impact how often. For those with a normal skin type three to four times a week with our gentle face exfoliants is reasonable. We have designed our products to be gentle as to not cause damage to your skin. If you have rosacea, once a week is recommended. You know your skin better than anyone else, so there will need to be a bit of playing around on your part to find what works for you.
What are you waiting for, get scrubbing.
